History of the Chattanooga Independent Percussion Ensemble
Before proceeding, it is important to note that the origins of the independent indoor activity in the Chattanooga area can be traced back to the Velocity Indoor Percussion Ensemble, originally founded by Jonathan Duke, and then later directed by Jason Harvey. Velocity was a consistent WGI Regional and World Championship finalist and was the recipient of two world championship medals (2002 WGI PIA silver medalist and 2004 WGI PIO bronze medalist). When Jonathan and Jason both decided to pursue successful professional careers outside the Chattanooga area, David Giddens founded Chattanooga Independent in November of 2005 to ensure that students had a quality opportunity to develop within the indoor marching percussion activity. In addition to David’s commitment to directing the group, the following individuals played an instrumental role in that inaugural year to keep things running: Jim Burton, Cleveland H.S.; Dr. Stuart Benkert, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; and Rick Chambers, formerly of Soddy Daisy H.S.
The organization was initially comprised of two competitive ensembles: an Independent Open Class group directed by David Giddens; and an Independent A Class group directed by Dallas Thomas. Great competitive success was experienced during that first season (2006) as both groups were WGI World Championship finalists in their respective classes. Since that time, the ensemble has maintained its commitment to promoting an environment that cultivates musical excellence, as well as positive personal development for high school and college students.
